Old timer told me to grease the hook block weekly, I thought he was crazy

Started running a 130 ton rig down in Houston about 8 months ago. The veteran operator on shift before me, Ray, kept saying the hook block needed grease every single Friday no matter what. I figured he was just old school and wasting time, so I skipped it for three weeks. Felt the block start to bind on a heavy pick last Tuesday, and sure enough the sheave bearings were dry and rough. Took me an hour to pull it apart and clean it out, plus I lost half a day of work. Anyone else got a maintenance habit they ignored until it bit them?

Did you actually hear the bearings grinding before you pulled it apart, or was it more of a gut feeling? I've skipped lube jobs on my rig for way longer than that and never had an issue, kinda sounds like a one-off thing.
