Just hit 500 hours of crane time without a single incident.
I kept track because a senior operator on my site in Houston told me to. It feels good to reach that number, but it surprised me how much I still double-check my picks even now. Any of you guys track a milestone like that?

Man, 500 hours of crane time with zero incidents? That is seriously impressive. A lot of guys never see that kind of clean record. I gotta ask, how do you not get a little complacent after the first couple hundred hours? It seems like that would be the hardest part, fighting the urge to just get the pick over with.

Read somewhere that pilots and surgeons have the same kind of mental checklist system to fight complacency, and it stuck with me. @troyreed, I started using a quick pre pick checklist that takes maybe 30 seconds before every single lift. Little stuff like double checking the level, making sure the tagline is clear, looking at the weather again. It sounds dumb but it forces your brain to reset like its hour one every time. Yeah, the urge to hurry is real, but that checklist thing keeps me from skipping steps just to get done faster.
