Ran bareback off the seat of my pants for 11 years before I finally sat down with the load chart for a 60 ton Liebherr and realized I'd been guessing my way through every pick, so I'm curious if any of you old hands actually checked yours before that first close call or did it take a near miss to make you look too?
Buddy of mine ran a small crane outfit out in Bellingham for years and swore the charts were for guys who didnt know their business. Then one day he's setting a generator and the boom starts doing something he didnt like, and afterward he goes and actually reads the chart and finds out hes been running like 115 percent of capacity on picks he thought were easy. Thing is he got lucky for a decade, probably because most of his loads were lighter than he figured and the ground was always solid. He told me the scary part wasnt the math, it was realizing how many times nothing went wrong and he took that as proof he was doing it right. So no, most guys I know didnt check until something talked back to them.
