Hydraulic hose burst on a 40-ton Grove in Nashville last Tuesday

I was lifting a HVAC unit onto a 6-story roof when the main hoist hose let go - sprayed oil everywhere like a whale sneeze. Had to lock the load in place and use the backup cable to set it down gently (thank goodness for slow workdays). Anyone else keep spare hoses in their truck or just wing it and pray?

My buddy Dave had a 3/4 hose pop on an 80-ton boom truck over in Memphis last spring. He learned the hard way too - now he keeps two spares in the tool box under his passenger seat.

Was the hose just old and dry rotted, or did it fail from something else like rubbing on a sharp edge? I always wonder if guys are replacing hoses on a schedule or just waiting for a bang and a mess. Seems like the cheap insurance is keeping spares, but knowing WHY they blow might save more than just the downtime.
