Had a beer with a retired operator who worked on the Space Needle

He said 'The machine doesn't lift the load, you do.' That simple line changed how I think about every single pick now. Anyone else have a moment like that?

Maybe it's just me but that sounds a bit over the top. It's a cool line for sure, but it's still a machine doing the heavy lifting. The skill is real, I get that, but the gear matters too. Idk, maybe some jobs get a little too poetic about the whole thing.

Heard a similar thing about cranes... the operator is the real machine.

Yeah, the operator is everything. I saw a crane operator thread a tiny space and it was pure skill.
