Found out the average crane operator makes 60k a year in rural areas

I was looking at Bureau of Labor stats last night and saw that crane operators in places like Nebraska average around $60,000 a year, which is way less than I figured for the risk we take. Has anyone else noticed how pay varies so much by region, or is it just me?

But doesn't 60k go a lot further in rural Nebraska than in a place like New York or San Francisco? I mean my cousin lives in a small town in Iowa and his mortgage on a decent 3-bedroom house is like $800 a month, you can't even rent a studio in a city for that. So maybe the pay gap is just adjusting for the cost of living being way different, you know, like the same standard of living but with lower numbers on the paycheck.

@nina_jenkins but those $800 mortgages come with zero job options and no specialists anywhere nearby.
