Threw $80 down the drain on that color remover kit from Sally's last month
I was trying to fix a bad box dye job on a client in Denver and thought I'd save her some money by using one of those Color Oops kits instead of a professional color correction. Big mistake. The stuff stripped her hair to a weird orangey green color and left it feeling like straw. I ended up spending twice as long putting a toner and deep condition on just to get it back to something she could live with. She was nice about it, but I felt terrible and had to comp half the service. Has anyone else had a catastrophe with those DIY color removers?

You said it "stripped her hair to a weird orangey green color" - was it that you think you left the remover on too long, or did the box dye underneath just react badly to the chemicals? I've heard those kits basically just open the cuticle and let color fall out, so if the dye was old or had metallic salts in it you're asking for trouble. What brand was the original box dye she used?

Oh man, I wish I could blame it on the remover but honestly I think the universe just wanted to punish me for thinking I could save money on hair color. The box dye she used was some no-name brand from a drugstore that I'd never even heard of... probably been sitting on the shelf since 2005. Between that and the remover it was like a chemical experiment gone wrong. I left that stuff on for like 10 minutes less than the box said and it still looked like a swamp monster rejected the color. At this point I'm convinced my hair is just cursed and I should stick to hats.

Tbh I used to think all color removers were pretty much the same and it was always user error when things went wrong. But hearing you break down how old box dye with metallic salts can basically turn into a chemistry experiment @finleyf88, that definitely changed my mind about just grabbing whatever is cheapest. Honestly scary to think something sitting on a shelf that long could cause that kind of reaction.
