That $5 brush cleaner hack I laughed at actually saved my brushes

Last month my coworker Jen told me to try using a dash of dish soap and olive oil mix instead of my fancy brush cleaner. I literally rolled my eyes at her. I've been using the expensive stuff for like 8 years and thought she was crazy. But I had a client come in with some serious makeup buildup that wouldn't budge. So I mixed up a little batch in a shot glass just to prove her wrong. Three swipes later my brushes looked brand new and smelled fine. Now I'm kicking myself for spending $15 a bottle on cleaner when I had this stuff in my kitchen the whole time. Has anyone else found a cheap alternative that works better than the salon stuff?

Gently correct you on that olive oil part though. I mean using straight olive oil can leave a film on your brushes and actually trap bacteria over time if you don't rinse really well. Maybe try switching to a drop of baby oil or jojoba oil instead since they're lighter and won't gunk up your bristles. I learned that the hard way when my goat hair brushes got all sticky after a few weeks.

oh man that's such a good point. i actually just watched a video from a brush maker where they were saying the same thing about oils. they recommended using a tiny bit of gentle shampoo or brush soap instead of any oil at all. something about how the soap breaks down the paint better without leaving any residue behind. i guess olive oil sounds like a hack but you're right, it can get gross later on. i switched to a brush cleaner bar a few months ago and my brushes feel way better now.
