Pro tip: I was wrong about the 'cold water only' rule for color-treated hair

For the first five years in my chair, I told every client with color to only use cold water to wash. A stylist from a salon in Austin showed me a study where they tested water at 80, 100, and 120 degrees on faded direct dyes. The 100-degree water caused no more fade than the cold, and the clients were way happier. I tried it on three of my own clients for a month, tracking their color with photos, and saw zero difference in fade speed. Now I just recommend lukewarm. Has anyone else found a 'rule' they followed that turned out to be more myth than fact?

Wait, so I've been giving myself brain freeze in the shower for nothing? That tracks. I fell for the whole "trim your hair every six weeks to make it grow faster" thing for way too long before I realized it just keeps the ends neat and does zero for growth speed.

That's really interesting. My stylist told me the same thing about cold water, so I've been freezing my head for years. Might ask her about this study.
