Heard a client say she 'doesn't trust anyone with fine hair' to cut it
I was at the coffee shop yesterday and overheard a woman telling her friend she has to drive an hour to her old stylist because she has fine hair and no one else gets it. She said, 'They always cut it like it's thick, and then I look like a dandelion puff.' It made me stop and think about how often we might default to our usual techniques without really feeling the hair first. I've been guilty of that, just going straight into a blunt cut without enough layering for fine textures. It's been about two weeks since I heard that, and now I make a point to spend an extra minute during the consultation just running my fingers through the hair to really gauge the density. How do you guys adjust your cutting approach for fine hair versus thick?

Ugh, that dandelion puff line is so real... I've seen it happen. For me it's all about shears and point cutting, never a razor. Razor just makes it look wispy and thin at the ends, like spider legs. I do a ton of light layering from the inside to remove weight you can't even see. It's the hidden weight that kills fine hair, makes it just sit there flat. You gotta cut it so it has a chance to move.

I always use a razor for fine hair, never shears, to avoid that blunt puffball look.

My stylist in Chicago swears by shears for my fine hair, @black.val. She says a razor can cause way more breakage and split ends over time. A good point cut with shears removes weight without leaving it looking choppy. You get movement without that damaged, frizzy texture a razor can create.
