Foiling with my eyes closed beat my usual mirror trick
I've been doing foils for about 12 years now, and I always thought I needed a mirror to check my sections. Last week I had a client with super thick hair and the salon was packed, no mirror free. So I just went by feel, running my fingers along the part and placing each foil blind. It took me maybe 10 minutes longer than normal, but the result was way cleaner. The sections were more even and I wasn't twisting my neck or squinting. I compared it to the same client's previous visit where I used the mirror, and honestly the blind method looked better. Has anyone else tried working without a mirror for precision work like this? What's your call on relying on touch over sight?
The part about your sections being more even when you go by feel makes total sense to me. When you're looking in a mirror you're seeing a flat picture of a round head, so your brain has to do this weird translation that messes with your spacing. Your hands just know where the last foil ended without any of that guessing. Going blind also kills the urge to stop and double check every five seconds, which is really what slows people down. I bet if you kept at it the time gap would close fast too. The mirror is a tool, not a rule, and your fingers already know the head better than your eyes do.
