Appreciation post: my teacher caught me using the wrong brush technique after 5 years

I learned cosmetology back in 2018 at a small school near Louisville, and I always thought my balayage was fine. Then last month my old instructor stopped by my chair and watched me do a full section. She just said, "You're painting like you're frosting a cake." I had no clue what that meant at first. Turns out I was overloading the brush and dragging it too hard against the foils, which caused patchy blends every single time. Clients never complained, but my photos always looked muddy compared to the other stylists in my salon. She showed me a lighter touch, more like a feathering motion with less product, and my last three color appointments came out way smoother. Has anyone else had a basic technique they learned wrong from the start, and how did you finally catch it?
