A client's blunt feedback about my blowouts stuck with me

Last month a regular at my station in Nashville told me my round brush work left her hair looking flat at the crown. She was right, I was overusing product and not lifting enough at the roots. I switched to smaller sections and hotter air, and now my blowouts hold shape for 3 days instead of fading by evening. Anyone else get a critique that rewired their whole technique?

The same thing happened to me a few years back with a client who said her hair looked too flat no matter what I did. I kept blaming her hair type until I filmed myself working and saw I was barely lifting the brush at the roots, just smoothing it down. Once I forced myself to use way smaller sections and actually pull up against gravity while drying, everything changed. Now I tell new stylists to act like they're trying to fluff a pillow, not paint a wall. That one comment saved me from doing lazy work for years, funny how that works.
