A client in my chair last month said my blowouts looked 'dated' and it stung
She was really nice about it, but she pointed out I was using a round brush from the 90s and pulling hair too tight from the roots. I switched to a newer, bigger barrel brush from Olivia Garden and focus on lifting at the ends now. Has anyone else had a client give them a style wake-up call?

Honestly, that comment might be about more than just the brush. Are you maybe using the same finishing products you always have? A lot of that "dated" feel comes from super stiff, high-shine hairspray. That helmet head look was the goal back then. Now it's about movement and a softer feel. Maybe try a light texture spray or a flexible hold mist instead of your usual aerosol.

What specific texture spray did you switch to after dropping the old hairspray?

Ever think about the water where you live? @tylermartin, I tried a popular texture spray but it made my hair feel weirdly sticky. Turns out the minerals in my hard water were mixing badly with one of its ingredients. I had to switch to a spray labeled for hard water, and it made a huge difference. The wrong product can just sit on top of your hair if your water is off.
