Warning: I tried that trending TikTok editing style and lost 3 days of work
So last week I decided to try that fast-paced jump cut style all the big YouTubers are doing now. The one where you cut out every breath and pause. I spent like 14 hours on a 10 minute video, slicing and dicing every single sentence. Uploaded it and my retention actually dropped by 22 percent compared to my normal relaxed style. People commented saying it felt rushed and anxious to watch. I learned that just because big creators do something doesn't mean it fits your content. What editing tricks have you guys tried that totally backfired?

Funny you mention that because I actually tried the OPPOSITE approach once - I added these long, slow intentional pauses between sentences thinking it would make me sound more thoughtful and profound. Ended up making my video feel like a funeral dirge, viewers said I seemed depressed or like I was reading a eulogy. Turns out there's a SWEET SPOT between rushed and glacial that's different for every creator's natural speaking rhythm.

the funeral dirge comparison got me good, that's exactly what it probably sounded like. i remember trying that same thing once, staring at my camera with these dramatic silences thinking i looked like a philosopher or something, rewatching it later i just looked like i forgot my lines. it's funny how we overcorrect, like there's no middle ground between auctioneer speed and that guy reading the terms and conditions at the end of a commercial. i think the real hack is just not thinking about it at all, the second you try to control your pacing your brain turns into a robot.
