The $40 lapel mic I almost returned actually saved my audio

I was sure I'd wasted money on a cheap Boya mic last spring for my interview videos. Then I did one outdoor shoot near a busy street in Austin and the built-in camera audio was unlistenable, but that little $40 thing picked up everything clean. I've done like 20 interviews with it since and not one complaint. Anyone else had cheap gear surprise them in a good way?
