The $12 lapel mic from Amazon outshot my $200 setup on a windy shoot

I spent six months blaming my camera for muddy audio on outdoor interviews in Austin, then a buddy loaned me a cheap wired lav with a furry windscreen and the podcast clips came out crystal clear, so has anyone else found that budget gear wins when the environment fights back?
