I used to film my cooking videos with my phone propped on a cereal box

That was my setup for about 2 years, until I tripped over the cord for my single work light in my Chicago apartment and sent a whole batch of cookies flying. I finally invested in a basic tripod and a second light from Amazon, which cost me around $120 total. Has anyone else had a kitchen disaster that finally pushed them to upgrade their gear?

Honestly that whole "kitchen disaster that pushes you to upgrade" thing is so real. Tbh I see it everywhere, like when someone's cheap coffee maker floods their counter and they finally buy a decent one. It's like we all wait for a total mess to happen before we let ourselves spend a little money to make life easier. Your cookie story is the perfect example of that moment.

My cheap toaster oven set off the smoke alarm last week, which is my version of @the_tessa's coffee maker flood. Guess I'm buying a real oven now.

Man, that cereal box life is so relatable. I did the same thing with a stack of cookbooks until my cat jumped up and sent my phone right into a bowl of pancake batter. The_tessa is totally right about how we need that final push. After my own mess, I grabbed a cheap phone clamp from a hardware store that screws onto any light stand, which was way cheaper than a full tripod. It's wild how a small fix can save you from so much future stress.
