A subscriber comment about my lighting changed my whole setup

Had a guy comment on my video last month. Said my face looked like a police lineup photo. Flat and shadowy. I was using a single ring light right in front. Thought that was fine. He suggested I try a 3 point lighting setup with cheap work lights from the hardware store. Cost me like $40 total. Tried it for my next video. People immediately said I looked professional. Never going back to that single light. Anyone else get game changing feedback from a random comment?

Wait, you put a paper towel over a desk lamp and that worked better than a ring light? That's wild to me. I've always thought those ring lights were the gold standard for cheap lighting. Honestly, it makes sense though, because diffusing the light with something like a paper towel softens everything up real nice. The donut shop thing made me laugh, but I bet your setup actually gives you that natural window light look. Did you have to tape the towel on or just drape it over?

Ring lights work fine for plenty of creators though.

Bought one of those ring lights on a whim and realized it made my face look like I was standing inside a donut shop at midnight. The shadows were all weird and my eyes looked like I had just seen a ghost. Ended up using a desk lamp with a paper towel over it instead and got way better results. But that's probably just because my room has terrible lighting and I have no idea what I'm doing.
