Foreman handed me a robotic total station 6 months ago and I've been scared of the screen til now
I've been running a level and a tape for 12 years on site, so when the layout crew dropped off a robotic total station at our job in Fort Worth 6 months ago I just left it in the trailer and kept doing things the old way. Last week my rodman was out sick and I had nobody to hold the stick, so I finally sat down with the thing and watched two 8 minute videos on my phone during lunch. Is it normal to feel like you're cheating when the robot locks on and you're doing a whole building corner by yourself?
Buddy of mine ran grade stakes for a dirt crew for 15 years before he touched one of those. His kid showed him how to set it up over a weekend, just messing around in the driveway. First day he used it on a real pad he called me sounding weird about it, like he snuck out of the house. Three months later he's doing curb layout solo and finishing before lunch. He still brings his old level out for small stuff, mostly to keep his head in the game. But he told me straight up he'd never go back to waiting on a guy to hold the stick. The machine doesn't argue with you or take smoke breaks, it just does the math and you swing the hammer. That part is not cheating, that's just finally getting paid for the years you already put in.
