Vent: Our firm's quick move back to the office seems off to me

We had a good setup with everyone at home for a long time. Now the bosses say we must come in three days a week, no real reason given. A few people on my team think it's a sneaky way to cut jobs later. I even heard a story about it being linked to secret investor deals. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of shady change?

Actually a friend at a tech place went through this same thing last year. They called everyone back for "collaboration" but it was really messy, half his team was spread out anyway. Then like two months later they cut a bunch of roles, and it was almost all people who had been hired as fully remote. It felt planned, like they made the rule knowing some people couldn't comply. Makes me wonder if your team is right about the hidden reason.

After the pandemic, this became a standard quiet layoff move.

My local library did a similar thing with reduced hours, then quietly let go of weekend staff. It's all about creating excuses to trim without saying it outright.
