The grumpy old ham radio guy who rewired my antenna thinking

I got into ham radio about a year ago and set up my first rooftop antenna the way every YouTube video said to. Then I met this retired guy at the local club meeting in Toledo who looked at my feed line and just said, 'That coil is eating your signal.' He showed me the SWR readings on his meter and it was 1:8 on the band I mostly use. I spent a weekend redoing the feed point and adding a proper choke, and now my signal went from barely reaching 20 miles out to hitting a repeater 60 miles away. That one critique from a grumpy old timer changed my whole approach. Has anyone else gotten advice that completely flipped their antenna setup?
