That week in August where everything went right at the wrong time

Three years ago I had a whole week where every single thing lined up perfectly. Found a $40 guitar at a garage sale on Tuesday that was actually worth $400. Then on Thursday my boss told me I was getting a promotion I didn't even apply for. By Saturday I was so suspicious I checked my credit report and found someone had opened 5 accounts in my name. Has anyone else had a string of good luck that turned out to be a cover for identity theft?

Didn't I see a Consumer Reports article a while back saying that kind of perfect timing is a red flag? It's like they want you distracted by the wins so you don't check your accounts for a few days too long. Freezing your credit is smart, but make sure you also file a police report to have a paper trail for any disputes.

Yeah, that's a classic sign. The good stuff is bait so you don't notice the bad stuff until it's too late. Freeze your credit with all three bureaus today, it's free and stops anyone from opening new accounts. You can unfreeze it for a day if you need to apply for something yourself.
