I used to just read the headlines on news sites, but then I started checking the source links

For a while, I'd see a wild story and just accept it, especially on those big news sites. Then last Tuesday, I saw a piece about a 'secret government program' and decided to click the source link at the bottom. It just went to another blog post, which linked to a forum rumor. That made me try a different way: I now go straight to the public records or official reports they're talking about, if they exist. It takes an extra five minutes, but you see what's actually there versus what someone says is there. Has anyone else found a good method for actually checking a story's original source?

Ever check if the source itself cites its own sources?

Yeah, I saw a whole thread about this last week. Someone linked to a study that looked really official, but when you clicked through, the study's own sources were just links to blog posts and opinion pieces. It was like a house of cards.

That's a solid point from @uma_johnson. You see this everywhere now, not just with studies but with news articles that just quote other news articles. It makes finding the real facts feel impossible sometimes.
