Government tracking vs. local surveillance - which one should worry you more?

I compared how much data the NSA collects through cell towers versus how much our own city's cameras catch in downtown Austin. The NSA casts a wider net but the city cameras at 6th and Congress recorded my face 14 times in one afternoon. That local system feels more invasive since it's tied to real-time police alerts. Has anyone else looked into their town's camera network and found something that made you uneasy?

Man, that really hits home. I had no idea how many times a local system could snap you in one day. I live in a smaller town and our cameras aren't tied to police alerts, but I saw a map of all the intersections with license plate readers and it gave me a sick feeling. Makes you wonder who's watching and what they're doing with that info when you're just walking down the street.

Those readers just sit there passively storing data, nobody is actively watching the footage.

Look, y'all are missing the biggest issue here. Those license plate readers don't just sit idle, they're constantly running searches against watchlists and private databases that nobody regulates. The real problem is there's zero oversight on what gets added to those lists or how long the data stays there.
