That random kid at a retro game store changed my mind about the GameCube
I was at a small shop in Austin last summer, just digging through a bin of loose discs. This kid, maybe 12 years old, walks up to his dad and starts explaining why the GameCube was actually better than the PS2 for local multiplayer. I rolled my eyes at first, but he just kept going. He talked about how Mario Kart Double Dash had a mechanic that forced you to cooperate with a friend instead of just racing solo. Then he pulled out a beat-up copy of Super Monkey Ball and said 'this game is harder than anything your generation had.' His dad just nodded like it was church. I ended up standing there for 20 minutes listening to this kid break down controller layouts and game libraries. Something about seeing a young person defend an old console with real passion instead of just nostalgia made me go buy a used GameCube that afternoon. Has anyone else had a moment where a total stranger sold you on a console you used to hate?

Kids are enthusiastic about everything, it doesn't make the GameCube suddenly a masterpiece.
