PSA: My original NES stopped reading carts last Tuesday and I almost tossed it
Turns out the 72 pin connector in my 1989 model got bent after 30 plus swaps of dusty flea market carts, so I spent 20 minutes with a toothbrush and rubbing alcohol in my kitchen in Akron and got Contra running again, has anyone else fixed one this way or did you just buy a refurb?
Cleaning a bent 72 pin connector with a toothbrush is just a band aid on a broken leg. Those pins don't bend back the way they were, they just get weaker every time you slide a cart in. Twenty minutes of scrubbing might get Contra running today, but give it a month and you'll be blowing on carts again like it's 1993. Boiling the connector or bending pins with a tiny screwdriver is the same trap, it works long enough to fool you and then quits right in the middle of a good run. A ten dollar replacement connector from any parts site takes fifteen minutes to swap and actually fixes the problem instead of hiding it. You got lucky this time, but that old connector is on borrowed time and you know it.
