Dropped $140 on a modded NES from a guy at a flea market in Tucson and it died in 3 days
Bought a "fully restored" modded NES from a guy at the swap meet in Tucson for $140 because he swore the RGB mod and new pin connector were done right. Got it home, fired up SMB3, and it worked perfect for maybe 3 days. Then the screen started flickering and by day 4 it wouldn't read any cartridge at all. Pulled the shell off and the solder work looked like someone did it with a butter knife, plus the cap job was just glued in place. So here's my debate for you all: is it ever worth buying a modded retro console from a random seller, or should you always pay more from a shop that offers a warranty? Because I'm out $140 and I want to know if I'm the only one who got burned this way.
My buddy Nate bought a "refurbished" Game Gear off some guy in a Facebook group for 90 bucks. It showed up and the screen looked fine for like a week, then the sound died and it would just shut off randomly. He opened it up and found out the guy had swapped in a recapped board from a totally different unit that didn't even match the shell. That's what gets me about this stuff, the seller always has a story about how they "do this all the time" and then you find out they're just flipping junk from a storage unit. Not saying every random seller is a scammer, but once you've been burned once you start looking at every deal sideways.
