Warning: Tried a magnesium float on a garage floor in Denver last week

I always swore by steel trowels for finish work, but a 30-year veteran at a job site talked me into trying his magnesium float. The slab sealed up way smoother with fewer air holes. Anybody else make the switch and regret it later?

Float them lightly and you won't get those pinholes, but don't overwork it.

Made the switch last year after fighting with pinholes on a garage slab. No regrets here, just gotta keep a light touch like you said (don't get too aggressive with it).

That's interesting how this same thing shows up in all sorts of trades. My brother-in-law is a woodworker and he always talks about how you have to find the right tool for the finish, not just grab whatever's at hand. It's like with cooking too, you wouldn't use a meat tenderizer on a fish fillet. So yeah, the magnesium float sounds like one of those tools that's made for a specific job and if you learn it right, you get way better results than the old way. I've noticed over the years that most folks who switch to the right tool for the job end up sticking with it.
