Update: The old timer who taught me to listen for the slump test
I mean, my mentor would have me close my eyes and just listen to the concrete mix. He said you could tell if it was right by the sound. These days, everyone just uses a meter or something. Idk, maybe it's just me but that hands-on feel is gone. It was like a secret language between us and the material.

Hear you, but I see the meters as learning that language faster. Lets you focus on the feel once you know the basics.
