I heard a guy on a jobsite say the finish is 90 percent mud work and I can't stop thinking about it
Was pouring a 30 by 40 slab over in Daytona a few weeks back and this old finisher named Ray, been doing it 31 years, told me most guys worry about the float and the trowel and forget the mud is where the job is won. I laughed at first because I thought he was just running his mouth like they all do around the pump hose. But then we laid that slab out and his screed line was dead nuts, and my side needed two extra passes to catch up because I got lazy with the mud. He said he can walk up to a pour and tell in ten seconds if it will finish clean just by looking at how wet and how flat the mud sits. I spent the next day watching him instead of running my trowel like a maniac, and I swear the edges came out tighter than anything I touched that week. Now I'm second guessing every time I rush the screed to get to the finish part. Any of you old timers agree with Ray or is he just telling stories?
