Had to pick between a steel trowel and a magnesium one for a big garage floor job last week

The customer wanted a super hard, smooth finish for their new garage in Springfield. I had my old steel trowel, but my buddy kept saying I should try his magnesium one. The choice was about how fast the slab would set up and how much pressure I'd need. I went with the magnesium trowel because the day was pretty humid and I figured it would cut easier on the first pass. It worked out great... the float went on smooth and I didn't have to fight the concrete to close it up. I saved a good 20 minutes of work time before the final steel finish. Anyone have a different go-to for humid days like that?

Honestly that's just smart work, picking the right tool for the conditions. I see it all the time with people who are really good at their jobs, they don't just muscle through. They pay attention to the little stuff like humidity or timing, and it saves them a ton of effort later. It's like my neighbor who checks the wind before he paints his fence, lol.

My uncle in Florida swears by his steel trowel no matter what the weatherman says. He'd be out there sweating buckets, fighting the mud like it owes him money, just to prove a point. So hearing you actually picked the right tool for the job feels like a miracle. I guess some of us actually like getting home before dark.

Yeah magnesium is a lifesaver when it's muggy out.
