UPS beeped all night and took down a file server at 2am

Last Tuesday a client's old APC unit started beeping and then dropped the whole rack mid-backup, which of course corrupted their drive array. I swapped in a spare I had and told them they need to budget for a proper battery replacement cycle, has anyone else had luck with runtime testing software to catch these before they fail?
