Took a $1500 hit because I skipped the grounding check at a client site in Tulsa
Was swapping out a motherboard on a server rack, and the static mat was in my truck. Big mistake. One touch of the RAM slot and we lost the whole array, plus the client's invoice offset the parts. That was last spring, and now I refuse to touch any board until I've wired myself to the frame first. Has anyone else fried gear by skipping the ESD basics when they're in a hurry?

Absolutely, I've been there and it still makes me cringe. Blew out a brand new graphics card last winter because I figured I'd just be super careful and skip the strap. Now I've got a clip-on wrist strap that lives in my laptop bag, so it's always with me and there's no excuse left.
