TIL my UPS battery backup was silently dying for 6 months

Had a power blip last Tuesday and my server just dropped like a rock. Checked the battery status and it was at 8% health, I guess I never looked at the software logs because everything seemed fine. Anyone else forget to actually test their backups under load?

Right there with you! I once called a plumber for a leaky pipe under my sink, and he casually unscrewed it, wrapped some Teflon tape around the threads, and charged me $150. The tape cost like $1 at any hardware store. My wallet still hasn't forgiven me.

Thetessa tell me about it. I once paid $600 for a "professional" to fix my dryer, and he just tightened a screw I could have done myself in two minutes. That was three years ago and I still get mad thinking about it. What was your "hard way" lesson involving? I swear some things you just have to learn through the wallet.
