The old repair-shop guy who told me to skip the POST test

Tbh I had an old timer at a shop in Cleveland tell me to just swap the PSU when a machine wouldn't boot, no multimeter or POST card. I thought he was being lazy, so I spent 2 hours diagnosing a dead motherboard that was actually a bad power supply. He said 'son, 9 times out of 10 it's the caps or the rail, stop being fancy.' I ignored him, fought with a soft-shorted GPU instead, and ended up swapping the PSU anyway. Now I check the 5VSB line first on any dead box, every single time. Has anyone else had a crusty veteran give advice that sounded dumb but was actually spot on?
