The $20 thermal pad trick I laughed at actually fixed my overheating laptop

Last month I had a Dell Latitude that kept thermal throttling even after cleaning the fan and repasting twice, so a guy in this forum said to slap some cheap thermal pads on the VRM area near the CPU. I thought it was snake oil because the temps looked fine on the sensors, but after 3 days of running it under load, the throttling stopped completely and the case stopped feeling like a skillet. Has anyone else tried this hack on older laptops where the heatsink just doesn't touch everything anymore?

Honestly doubt it's the pads fixing it. Maybe the extra pressure or you reseating something just happened to work this time.
