Pro tip: Found out I was installing RAM sticks wrong for years
Been building PCs for side jobs about 8 years now. Last week a client's Ryzen system kept crashing. I reseated the RAM like always, no luck. Then a buddy stopped by and pointed out I was putting them in slots 1 and 3 instead of 2 and 4 for dual channel. Never bothered to read the motherboard manual. 30 seconds to fix it and the system ran perfect. Has anyone else had a basic hardware setup slip past them for that long?

Yeah @lindamartin, I'm basically the poster child for not reading manuals.

Tbh I gotta disagree a bit here. I've been building for a long time too and I always check the manual for RAM slots because some boards are weird about which ones to use first. It's not like you're alone though, I've seen plenty of folks make that same mistake.

lindamartin mentioned how some boards are weird about which slots to use first and that's the real problem honestly. I've had boards where the manual said 2 and 4 for dual channel but the silk screening on the board itself showed 1 and 3 as the primary set. It's like they purposely want to confuse you sometimes. I still double check every build now because that one time taught me to just not trust my gut with RAM.
