Oh man, I had the same thing happen to me. My buddy who runs a small server shop warned me about them back in 2019 and I thought he was being dramatic. Then I had two drives fail during a rebuild and lost everything, worst day of my IT life.

Man oh man, that's rough but I gotta agree with that old IT guy. It's like when people ignore that weird noise their car's been making for months and then the engine blows on the highway. In my experience, these patterns show up everywhere once you start looking - people hold onto outdated tech or old habits way past their expiration date because change is a pain. I've seen it with friends who still use ancient routers or software that's been vulnerable forever, just because "it works fine for what I need". But the tricky part is, you never really know if something's actually fine until it fails hard, and then you're kicking yourself for not updating sooner. Take it with a grain of salt, but from what I've watched over the years, most things that are "fine" today are just waiting to cause a headache tomorrow.
