The 3-2-1 rule is solid for most people, but a lot of folks skip the "offsite" part and think a second hard drive in the same desk drawer counts. That's a mistake if fire or theft is a concern. Cloud storage or a drive kept at a friend's house is worth the hassle for anything you can't replace. Also, test your restores every few months from all three copies. A backup that won't load when you need it is just an expensive paperweight. Sounds like you dodged a bullet, so use that scare to lock down a proper system now.

Tbh that restore testing part is the one everyone ignores until it bites them. My buddy had this huge external drive with years of family photos on it, thought he was set. Then his laptop died and he went to pull everything off the backup and that drive just clicked and whirred without mounting. He spent like 300 bucks at a data recovery place and they only got about half of the files back, some were corrupted. So now he's got this whole system with cloud backups and a drive he swaps with his brother every month. It's a pain but better than losing those photos forever. Ngl I need to do the same thing myself, I've been putting it off way too long.
