I thought thermal paste brand mattered until I watched a guy at the Columbus Micro Center build 3 PCs in one afternoon
Stopped by the Micro Center on Bethel Road in Columbus two Saturdays back just to grab some SATA cables, and they had a build demo going near the DIY counter. This tech was putting together three rigs back to back, and I noticed he used a different paste on each one: the $12 stuff everyone fights about online, plain white silicone, and a tube that looked older than me. He told me he's been building for 14 years and the only thing he actually cares about is using enough and seating the cooler right. I argued in my head the whole drive home, because I've been the guy telling new techs to spend the extra ten bucks for peace of mind. But then I thought about the 40 or so machines I've repasted at the shop and how my real comebacks were always from bad mounting pressure, never the brand. He did say the cheap stuff dries out faster after 5 or 6 years, which is fair, but most of our clients swap hardware way before that. So now I'm rethinking my whole speech when a customer asks which paste to buy. Any of you actually seen a paste brand make a real temp difference on a properly seated cooler, or is it all just mounting pressure and airflow?
