I finally bought into thermal paste myths and it cost me $40

Always thought spending extra on that fancy paste was a scam, but last month a client's Ryzen 5 kept hitting 95C under load and a cheap tube of MX-6 dropped it 14 degrees. Anyone else found a brand that actually made a difference or was it just my bad application before?

Oh man, I went through almost the exact same thing with an old 3600. I was convinced I just didn't know how to mount the cooler right, turns out the stock paste was basically dried glue. MX-6 is solid, but if you want something that stays good for years without drying out, give Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut a try. It's a little pricier but it spreads nice and thin and I've never had it pump out on me like some cheaper pastes do. Just make sure you're doing a pea sized drop in the middle, that's all you really need.

That "pea sized drop in the middle" has been the source of many self-inflicted thermal headaches for me. I swear half the tubes I've wasted were from me overthinking it and slathering it on like butter on toast. Guess I just had to learn the hard way that being cheap with paste costs more in the end.
