After a bricked motherboard, I stand by skipping unnecessary BIOS updates

My shop always pushes BIOS updates like they're mandatory. I think that's asking for trouble when the system works fine. I had a client's computer die last week after a recommended update, and we spent hours fixing it. Most home users don't need the latest firmware, just stable operation. Other techs say I'm lazy, but I avoid updates without a clear problem to solve. This saves time and prevents those random boot failures. It's annoying how everyone acts like I'm wrong without checking my success rate.

Exactly, that's why I only update if there's a real fix I need, like @uma668's friend found out the hard way.

My buddy Mark lost his whole gaming rig last month after a BIOS update from the manufacturer's website. It was a brand new Asus board, and the update notes just mentioned "improved system stability." His PC wouldn't post at all afterwards... just a black screen and error lights. He had to ship the motherboard back for an RMA, which took three weeks. He's on the "if it ain't broke, don't flash it" team for life now.

Wait, he had to RMA a brand new board over a BIOS update? That's brutal. Three weeks without your main PC is a serious punishment. I get being careful, but a straight brick from the official update file is rough. Makes you wonder what actually went wrong on their end. I'd probably join that team too after an experience like that.
