A simple driver update turned into a 4 hour hunt for a phantom USB device

It was a Windows 10 machine that kept throwing a Code 43 error, and the fix ended up being a hidden USB hub driver from 2018. Has anyone else had a weird driver issue that took forever to pin down?

Phantom USB device" sounds a bit dramatic for a driver problem. It's just a bad driver, not some ghost in the machine. People waste hours on stuff a clean Windows install would fix in one go.
