Warning: your dive log is not proof of anything and I'm tired of pretending it is
A kid on my crew in Port Fourchon last month told me he had 400 logged dives and that should count for more than the guy with 90 who has been working the same pipeline for 8 years. He was dead wrong and I told him so. Hours in the water running a torch or torquing bolts matter more than stamps in a book, and half the logs I see are signed off from jobs nobody can verify. How are you all weighing time in the water against certs when you pick a diver for a job?
Saw the same thing in the Gulf back in 2015. Had a guy show up with a log book thicker than a phone book and a binder full of certs. First day on the job he couldn't figure out how to keep his umbilical from snagging on the riser clamps. Old boy next to him with maybe 60 dives total watched him flail for ten minutes then just reached over and fixed it without saying a word. That told me everything I needed to know about who was actually worth their weight down there. Logs get you in the door, that's it. What matters is whether you can read the water and the rig and your own gut when something goes sideways at 200 feet. I'll take the guy who's been on the same job for years over the guy with a fancy book every single time.
