Ha! That old timer probably had a few stories to back up that advice. I'd bet money he's been through that exact same thing more times than he can count. Nothing like a good dose of real world experience to humble your fancy new gear. Hope you didn't end up too stuck or cold out there.

Respectfully, I see it a bit differently. Those old timers might have solid experience, but modern gear usually handles icing conditions a lot better than people give it credit for. A quick pre-dive check and proper maintenance can go a long way toward avoiding that kind of headache in the first place.
