I've been crimping my underwater comms connectors wrong for three whole years, and only realized it when a veteran diver in Morgan City asked why my voice kept cutting out.

He showed me how I was missing the extra quarter-turn on the collar that seats the O-ring properly, a simple fix that would've saved me countless murky surface comms checks.

That "simple fix" you mentioned is often not so simple for a new diver. I've found those extra steps in the manual are easy to overlook when you're learning a dozen other things. Good on that veteran for taking the time to show you.

You know what gets me, how many things have a secret extra step like that? I was putting together a garden hose quick-connect last summer and fought with leaks for a week. Turns out there's a little plastic clip you have to push in while you twist, something the diagram on the package totally missed. Makes you wonder what else we're all doing wrong without knowing, right? That's kind of what @margaret_kim13 was getting at with the manual stuff being easy to skip.
