Had to pick between a 3mm and a 5mm wetsuit for a long harbor job in Seattle last month.

The job was a full week of underwater hull cleaning in 50 degree water. I went with the 5mm, thinking I'd need the warmth. After about two hours on the first day, I was overheating and moving felt like a real chore. I ended up switching to my old 3mm the next day and just dealt with the initial cold shock. It was way better for mobility and I could work longer without getting cooked. Anyone have a good middle ground for cold water jobs where you still need to move a lot?

A 4mm suit is a good start, but the real trick is finding one with different thickness panels. Some suits have thinner neoprene under the arms and behind the knees for better movement. That extra flexibility makes a huge difference when you're working hard in cold water. It's worth looking at suits built for active diving, not just pure warmth.
