I put off buying a hot water suit setup for two seasons because everyone told me the Gulf stays warm enough with a decent wetsuit. After a job in February where I came up shaking so bad I couldn't get my helmet off, I finally dropped $430 on the whole kit with the hose and manifold. That next deep job off Galveston in 58 degree water, I was the only guy on the crew not doing jumping jacks at the 20 foot stop. Sitting there warm while three other divers were miserable changed my mind fast. Anyone else run a hot water setup or do you just layer up and deal with it?
Yes! Finally someone who gets it. I did the exact same thing, sat on the fence for way too long while everyone kept saying "ah you don't need that down here" and then had one bad winter run that scared me straight. Getting that warm water flowing into your suit mid-dive is a total game changer and I honestly don't know how I dove without it before. Watching the other guys turn blue on the stops while you're just floating there comfy is almost funny, except you remember being that guy not long ago. Layering up works okay on short shallow stuff but once you're doing real deco in cold water it's just misery for no reason.
