Appreciation post: Mental health chats on the dive boat feel normal now

Back in the day, nobody mentioned if a job got to them mentally, you just shrugged it off. Now, I see rookies and old hands alike actually talking about the stress, and it helps a lot. When did you first notice this shift happening in your crews?

On my last contract in the Bahamas, mental health was still a taboo topic. The seasoned divers would brush off any talk of stress as weakness. I watched a rookie shake for an hour after a close call and nobody said a word. He just smoked alone on the stern until we docked. That was in 2022, so this shift you mention definitely isn't universal. Some crews might chat now, but in my world, that old silence is still the norm.
